Planning your day

How to plan the perfect dog-friendly wedding

Including your furry best friend in your wedding is one of the most heartwarming trends for modern couples — and honestly, we can’t imagine saying "I do" without them! But as adorable as it is to have your dog by your side on your big day, it does take a little extra planning to make sure everything runs smoothly (and pawsitively!).

Whether you want your pup to be the ring bearer, walk down the aisle, or simply make a cameo in your photos, here’s your go-to guide to planning a stress-free, dog-friendly wedding.

Start with a dog-friendly venue

Before you start imagining your dog in a cute floral collar, the first step is making sure your venue actually allows dogs.

Questions to ask your venue:

  • Are dogs allowed on the premises during the ceremony and/or reception?
  • Are there any restrictions (size, breed, number of dogs)?
  • Are dogs allowed indoors, or just outdoors?
  • Are there designated pet-friendly areas?
  • Is there a quiet space where my dog can rest during the event?

Bonus tip: Even if the venue allows dogs, it's always a good idea to visit with your dog beforehand to see how they respond to the space.

Assign a dedicated dog chaperone

One of the biggest mistakes couples make is assuming they or a family member can handle the dog on the day — but between getting ready, photos, the ceremony, and mingling with guests, your hands will be full!

A professional dog chaperone or wedding pet sitter is worth every cent. They’ll:

  • Bring your dog to the venue
  • Take care of walks, toilet breaks and feeding
  • Keep your dog calm during busy moments
  • Remove your dog from the action when needed
  • Take them home or to accommodation afterwards

If hiring a professional isn’t in the budget, ask a trusted friend who knows your dog well (but make sure they’re not part of the wedding party).

Choose your dog’s role carefully

Not every dog is suited to being front and centre at a big event — and that’s okay! Think about your dog's personality when deciding their role.

Popular ways to include your dog:

  • Walking down the aisle with a bridesmaid or groomsman
  • Ring bearer (safely secured to a collar or harness)
  • Flower pup with cute accessories
  • Sitting with family during the ceremony
  • Posing for wedding photos
  • Guest of honour at cocktail hour

If your dog is shy, reactive, or easily overwhelmed, consider having them present for photos only or including them in other meaningful ways (more on that below).

Dress them for the occasion (safely)

There are so many adorable outfit options for wedding day dogs, but safety and comfort should always come first.

Dog attire ideas:

  • Floral collar or garland
  • Custom bow tie or bandana
  • Harness with wedding accents
  • Tuxedo or dress (if your dog is comfortable wearing clothes)

Pro tips:

  • Do a dress rehearsal at home to make sure your dog is comfortable
  • Avoid anything restrictive or that could overheat your dog
  • Never force your dog to wear something they dislike

Prepare your dog for the big day

Help your dog feel confident and comfortable by:

  • Practising commands like “sit,” “stay” and “come”
  • Familiarising them with the venue (if possible)
  • Taking them for extra walks and exercise beforehand
  • Bringing plenty of treats, toys and familiar bedding
  • Keeping them well-hydrated and fed on the day

Plan for dog comfort & wellbeing

It’s easy to get swept up in wedding details, but your dog's comfort should be a top priority.

Things to consider:

  • Will it be too hot, cold or noisy for your dog?
  • Is there a quiet space they can retreat to?
  • Are they comfortable around large groups of people?
  • Who’s responsible for them during key moments?

Remember: Sometimes, it’s kinder to have your dog present for part of the day only, especially if they’re older, anxious or not used to crowds.

Have a back-up plan

As much as you’d love for your dog to be involved, sometimes things don’t go to plan — and that’s perfectly fine. Weather, venue restrictions, or an overwhelmed pup might mean a change of plans.

Sweet alternatives if your dog can’t attend:

  • Include their photo in your stationery
  • Have a cake topper featuring your dog
  • Incorporate dog-themed décor
  • Donate to a dog charity in their honour
  • Have them join the engagement shoot instead

Final dog-friendly wedding checklist

  • Dog-friendly venue confirmed
  • Dedicated chaperone or pet sitter booked
  • Role for your dog decided (and suitable)
  • Outfit or accessories chosen
  • Practised key commands
  • Packed essentials: treats, water, leash, waste bags, bedding
  • Quiet space arranged
  • Back-up plan in place

With a little preparation, patience and planning, your dog can be part of your wedding in the most joyful, stress-free way.

After all, they’re family — and your wedding day should be about celebrating with all your loved ones, paws included.
