6+ months before the wedding

Choose a dog-friendly venue
  • Confirm that pets are allowed on-site (both indoors and outdoors)
  • Ask about leash rules and restricted areas
  • Check if dogs are allowed during the ceremony and reception
  • Ensure there’s safe outdoor space for walks or toilet breaks
Decide your dog’s role
  • Ring bearer
  • Flower pup
  • Walk down the aisle with the couple or a bridal party member
  • VIP guest in photos only
  • Symbolic presence (eg. included in signage or decor)
Book dog-friendly vendors
  • Photographer who’s comfortable working with animals
  • Wedding planner experienced with pet participation
  • Optional: pet sitter or professional wedding pet attendant
  • Caterer: confirm what food and areas are dog-safe
Start outfit planning
  • Choose or design a dog outfit (bandana, bow tie, floral collar, etc.)
  • Test your pup’s comfort in their attire — no rubbing, overheating or tightness
  • Match to your wedding theme or colour palette

3–4 months before the wedding

Start dog training or prep
  • Practice walking down the aisle calmly on a lead
  • Rehearse sitting still for short periods
  • Get them used to larger crowds, music and camera flashes
  • Do test runs in similar environments, if possible
Prepare your dog’s wedding day bag

Start gathering these essentials:

  • Leash and harness
  • Portable water bowl
  • Treats and food
  • Poop bags
  • Doggy wipes and towel (just in case!)
  • A familiar toy or blanket for comfort
  • Spare outfit or accessories
  • Dog-safe bug repellent or calming spray

Organise rest & quiet zones

  • Set up a supervised room or portable crate for downtime
  • Use signs to help guests respect your dog’s space
  • Add dog-safe fans or cooling mats in summer months
Assign a dog handler or buddy
  • Choose a trusted friend or hire a pet attendant
  • They’ll walk, feed, soothe and supervise your pup throughout the day
  • Brief them on your dog's routines, signals and personality quirks

1 week before the wedding

Grooming & final fittings
  • Book a bath, trim or full grooming session
  • Try on your dog’s outfit one more time to ensure a comfy fit
  • Clip nails to avoid snags or scratches
Confirm all dog-related details
  • Revisit your venue’s pet rules
  • Confirm your dog’s schedule with your photographer
  • Rehearse any aisle walks or staged photos
  • Final check-in with your dog handler or sitter

On the wedding day

Arrival & settling in
  • Arrive early to give your dog time to explore and get comfortable
  • Offer water, a bathroom break and some cuddles
  • Allow guests to say hello — if your pup enjoys that!
Capture the magic
  • Coordinate dog-friendly shots with your photographer
  • Take family portraits, ceremony walk and candid cuddles
  • Don’t stress if your dog doesn’t pose perfectly — natural moments are often the most memorable
Keep them happy & safe
  • Provide regular treats, toilet breaks and water
  • Allow breaks in a quiet zone
  • Watch for signs of stress or overstimulation
Handoff plan
  • If your dog isn’t staying for the whole day, hand them off after the ceremony or photos
  • Arrange for drop-off at home or a sitter’s place with all their belongings

After the wedding

Say thank you
  • Give a shoutout to your dog’s handler, pet attendant or sitter
  • Include your pup in the thank-you cards with a cute photo or paw print stamp!
Relive the memories
  • Share your favourite dog-inclusive photos or video clips on social media
  • Create a mini photo album of your dog’s wedding day moments
  • Frame a picture of the three of you for your home — it’s the ultimate family portrait!

A little extra planning goes a long way in making your wedding a joyful, safe and meaningful experience for your dog. This checklist will help you stay organised, reduce stress and ensure your best furry friend enjoys the day as much as you do.

Because let’s be honest — your wedding just wouldn’t be the same without those happy paws and tail wags.
